View Full Version : Army fiance counting down to Afghan
Hi girls,
Wow, this site is a find. My OH and I have been together for the past 5 years and as luck would have it, he hasn't been on operational tour in that time. We've had plenty of time apart and he even went to America for 2 years (I managed to get a job and visa over there too... eventually!), but I am really anxious about the upcoming Afghan tour. He's going in October and we'll get married after he gets back. He's actually over there right now on a recc'y for a few days and I'm beside myself with worry. I don't know if there are any magical fixers for the sick feeling, but if anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it... and I have a feeling you'll be seeing a lot of me here in the coming months... thanks in advance...

Hi Laura welcome to wags hun! My hubbi has done 3tours of afghan, I know how worried you must be feeling but once they are out there the time does go fast! I always but it to the back of my mind about where he is and just look forwards to the time when he gets home! So tell us alittle more about yourself XX
hey laura welcome to wags!! im lorraine and my OH is in the RLC. chat 2 u soon xxx
Hello angel... Im Claire, and my fella got back from a 7 month tour of Iraq last week... From experience.. nothin is ever as bad as it seems. My way of coping was to imagine he was just at camp and i couldnt see him, i didnt watch the news, read the papers.. and i kept busy! Itll all be fine babe.. You always find ways of coping even when u think u wont xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
HI THERE Im Helen, my oh is in Iraq at the moment, I know how your feeling, but as Claire says I am finding the best way to cope is not to read papers etc and i also keep telling myself he is on an ex somewhere... just so long as i dont imagine him being there im fine.
This site has helped greatly over the last month.... wow has it been a month already??? lol Just keep yourself busy. I write loads of ebluey and blueys and I love trying to think up new and interesting things for his parcels.
Talk to you soon xx
hey hun, welcome to wags, my OH is in Afghan at the min has been there just over a week now but like the girls say you find ways to help, keep yourself really busy, take up a hobby or something! Writing lots of e-blueys and sending parcels also helps!
I've just pretend he is still in Cyprus not on tour and its working so far! xx
hi hun, welcome to wags, you've come to the right place, these girls can get ya through anything. xxx
Hi girls,
Thanks so much for the lovely supportive messages. I just logged in and it really does help to feel less alone in a situation that few of my friends can really relate to. You're all really kind to share your experiences and advice and I think I'll be spending some time here, so hopefully get to know some of you :). I feel a little silly as it seems you have all lived through this, and I'm only just having my first taster... but I appreciate the sanity checks more than you know... thank you! xx
Quick question... do you all really manage to keep away from the papers and the news? Am I a freak for actually wanting to check the news lots of times every day...?
I managed for 7 months!!! If u really wana keep sane then u will do it.... the tour woulda seen so much harder if id have kept with the news!! x x
Hi Laura.....
I'm Beth and i'm a bit of a traitor.....i'm not actually an Armywag, i'm a Navywag but i can't keep my nosey self out of this forum....it so much better than the Navy's!...lol so i know you'll enjoy coming on here.
My Fiance' is currently out in Afghan at the moment, he's been there 12 days now and my countdown has already started....as you may well see on my signature line.....
I can't actually say if i'm coping great at the moment as i don't know myself but as everyone has said, keeping busy is one of the main priorities of passing the time while your OH is away and it works.....it honestly and trully doesn't feel like my OH has been away 12 days....i'm shocked at even saying 'twelve days'......Welcome to Wags anyway, i'm sure this site will become a crutch when you need advice, support or just a chat...
Have fun

Hi Laura,
I'm kat and only stumbled across this site a few months ago, but have found everyone here friendly and supportive and full of useful advice.
My OH is training in the RAF so i at the moment am lucky to get him most days but he will soon be posted to his perminant base, so i'll be relying heavily on the girls here for sainity!!
Take care, and hoepfully chat to you soon xxx
Heh Laura,
I'm Rebecca. My blokes in Afghan at the mo too. You will get through it.
My little bit of advice would be to plan trips out with girlie friends, family etc, getting your hair done etc, take up a new sport or fitness class - So you've got something to distract your mind and to focus on.
Also I've found it helpful to give myself little projects of things I keep on putting off to get sorted to surprise him when he gets back i.e I really need to get my drivers license etc.
Hope this helps. Look forward to chatting more XXX
Quick question... do you all really manage to keep away from the papers and the news? Am I a freak for actually wanting to check the news lots of times every day...?
Hiya I'm Sarah and not been on this site long myself. Anyway to ansaw your question I think Im like you, I couldn't not read the papers and watch the news ( my bloke just got back from a 6 month tour of afgan in march) I cant handle not knowing!! I was even watching that programme with Ross Kemp!! I had to know, I needed to have an idea of what he was going through. Anyway hun that was me, my advise do what ever you need to do, hell be back before you know it, and until then just come on here and vent your frustrations with us! :D:D
Thank you so much for your kind and thoughful notes, girls, I really do appreciate them and it's really helpful to connect with some people going through similar things. My OH got back from the recc'y last week safely, and now we have a few months countdown before he goes for the 6 month tour... though of course he will be away 90% of the time between now and then with training etc. So you will be seeing more of me. Looking forward to chatting to you all soon.
