View Full Version : Hello and can you girls help!

Hello!

I'm here as my other half is considering joining the RAF as a pilot and I could do with some info.

I've been on other forums and found I was in the wrong place and got a mouthful from chaps already serving so I thought I'd try here.

I want to know what life is like for a pilot/officers wife - I wont be living on site and based in South Yorkshire as this is where I work and I can't just ditch my job. It already sounds that this is a major inconvenience. I'm not convinced its something I want to be part of but in the interest of fairness I've got to look into it properly.

So what can I expect life to be like?

Thank you!!

welcome dont worry we wont give you a mouthfull,

its not an easy life i cant say about the RAF coz my man is in the marines but its all the forces so should be able to help.

its not easy to have your man away all the time but its not as bad as you think take a look at the thead about perks on having a man in the forces that should help, I met mine 6 months ago and had already been in for 3 years so i dont know what its like for them joining whilst already in the relationship, I think the best advise is to take a look at ur relationship do u think its worth sticking around for would he stick by u if u decided to make a big change in your life?

hope you figure it all out and remember we are all here to help each other out good luck

there are a few girls on here who have men who have just joined up jodie and emma-baby being 2 of them, also i know that puss in boots (kat) has her oh in the RAF and i'm fairly sure that he's still fairly new. Why not pm them and i'm sure they'll be able to help?

As for me my oh is in the army and its not the easiest of lives but you learn to cope and if you love them enough then you just do it tbh ;), my oh is based 2 1/2 hrs away from me but we live together and he comes home evry weekend so its not that bad, even b4 we lived together he used to come and get me and take me back to camp with him for the weekend (made easier now by me driving)

I was the one that started that thread :), if you go to armywags forum then into general chat and scroll through the threads i think it was called "the upside to the forces" or "the upside to having a man in the forces"

Hope all that helps and Welcome to Wags :D

Thanks Cheeky.... Hello! My Oh is a pilot in the RAF. I would say it depends on what he gets to fly. Mine flies helicopters and i think the thing that makes it a tad easier for me is that he can only be stationed in a few places in the Uk and so when he gets his posting that will pretty much be where he will stay. This is also true when he is training, it may will not be near you (officer training is in lincolnshire) but at least you will be able to get into some sort of routine, which is easier than the guys who get a new posting every couple of years!

Also their tours are not as long as the Army and Navy chaps.

The down side, is that during their training, everything is very stressful, and plans are constantly changing!

The best bit is ... loads of balls to go to!! I have already been to 2 this year!! So be prepared to buy lots of frocks!! PM me anytime!

No problem Cheeky! Am glad to be off assistance... not sure how good the advice is though lol!!

Yep, he is an officer, they get graduation balls every time a course graduate, then there is a summer one and an xmas one. And they are the partners ones! He has loads of formal dinners that i am not allowed to go to! Have already had to buy 3 formal frocks this year! He's costing me a bleeding fortune!!!

We are having such a lovely week! Its so nice having him here every night! But scary to know his grad is only 8 weeks away. Then it'll be weekends only for ages!

Tip: Rotate the dresses once you have about 5

Jamie literally gave me his card last year and said go for it (woo-hoo, my own pretty woman moment!) as he said he'd invited me so he would pay for the dress. etc (we'd only been together 3 months) but as he did this one of his friends wives found out and he ended up having to buy her a dress lol!

Anyway, she said to me that she just rotates her dresses and the wives also do swaps and stuff. Rotating seemed like a good idea to me as by the time you get round to wearing a dress again it should have been a while and there'll be different accessories and stuff around to update it and an added bonus that no-one else will be wearing the same as you :D

I'm missing the summer ball this year :( but hopefully will be going to the Xmas one and he said there was some kind of formal do when they come back off tour! yay!! 2 new dresses!! (i only have 2 so far hehe!!)

He bought the one for the summer ball. I knew it was perfect the moment i put it on! But it was stupidily expensive!

I don't mind buying the new frocks, as i have formal do's at my work so they get recycled there and get lots of use! Plus any excuse to go shopping!
