Hi Girls, I just wanted to introduce myself my name is Vicki and I have just started dating a soldier. So I guess I better start from the begining hes been serving in Afganistan we met on the internet (which I am now ashamed to admit) but hey it served a purpose. We had been emailing, chatting and he even called me from Afghan over a 2 week period it was like we had had the same upbringing and had so much in common and just clicked. He then informed me he was being sent back early on R&R over the last 2 weeks and had to go back to his base in Northern Ireland first to sort some stuff out, he promised he would back in England by the bank holiday weekend but the Army made him stay till the Tuesday so I decided I really wanted to meet him so jumped on a plane and we had the most perfect weekend it was like we had always known each other. He has now been back for his 2 weeks we have met up a couple of times and I have even met his parents and it just seems too perfect.

However hes headed back to Afghan on Monday till September, I have said that I'll wait for him but I have no experience of the Army, war zones, or even how I should be feeling. One thing is I have really started listening to the news and its scaring the hell out of me....I need some tips from you guys on how I should learn to deal with it, I want to be strong for him and reasuring. I would also like some tips on what its like being an army wife, I am a pretty independant girl with my own career and hobbies.

Sorry for the long post some advice and chatting to people in my situation would be really useful.

Thanks Vicki xxxx:)

hi hun welcome to wags. i think its lovely how you met and you seem so happy with him. i agree with andrea, news is a no no!! lol. this site has some fantastic girls who can give advice on anything! this has been my lifeline for the past 2 years.

you'll probably have a mix of emotions and tours and the army in general seem to send you on a wild emotional rollcoaster, but despite all that it is so worth it. i wouldnt change my life for anything. you'll start getting used to it all and it doesnt seem so bad after a while, even though you do have good days and bad days!! hopefully september will be here before you know it xxx

Thanks for your reply, I will make a conscience effort to turn the radio off when the news comes on in the morning on my way to work. It is confusing though as I haven't had enough time to really establish my feelings, but one thing I know is that he makes me feel so safe and comfortable and I really can see myself being with him for a long time.

I met my oh over the internet and I'm not ashamed to admit it. We just clicked, met and got together and were living together after being together for 9/10 months. We've now been together just over 2 yrs and couldn't be happier.

welcome to wags hun. a few of the girls met their OHs online- no need to be ashamed!

i agree with the other ladies- watching the news is a big no no lol it makes you worry even more than you already do! it isnt easy i wont lie, but like i've said in another thread, it makes your relationship stronger and you tend not to take eachother for granted so much. as for you saying you're an independant girl with a career and own hobbies thats great! you need to have something that will take your mind off things and it sounds like you already have plenty!

Hey Thanks for all your kind words Girls, I do hope that mine ends as happily as yours just wish I could have spent more time with him before he had to go back to Afghan...I am currently going through the waiting period of waiting for his first e-mail when he arrives at camp! Once I have that I think I can chill a bit and stop stressing quite so much. I am getting semi addicted to this site already! My OH is Radio Systems Engineer in Signals. What about yours?

hey hun,
welcome to the site.
my fiance is currently in afghanistan as well till october. this is our second deployment and it is tuff, but i tell my self that each day is closer to him. deployments put alot of pressure on you, you will be feeling alot of different emotions right now hun, but these are the times when you learn about who you are and get independant. i do everything with my oh so being independant is what i am learning. i never watch the news, it makes you feel worse, i dont read the paper either. keeping busy is the key, find a hobbie, join to a club just dont sit in thats when the thoughts start to creep up on you. i know friends may not always understand but we do hun so pop on here alot. :) also there is so many ways to keep in touch with him, with the interent, blueys, e-blueys and you can send him packages to let him know that you are thinking of him.
deployments make the realtionship so much stronger, he will be missing you too so when you see eachother again the time is so much appreciated. so that is a positive thing to look at

Hey Ladies, thanks again for all your kind words - I have been thrown in at the deep end with the deployment being so soon on in our relationship but at least I am under no illusion as to what I will have to deal with as an 'Army WAG' by the next one I will be all ready and prepared. I am an independant person and before meeting my other half I had been single and living alone for nearly a year so quite used to my own company...although its always different when you care about someone thats not with you!
I have loads of hobbies already horse riding I own my own horse, I have a lovely doggy never alone with a dog girls, I have very close friends that are trying thier hardest to keep my busy this week, work and I'm studying part-time for a masters degree and have a massive dissertation to do over the summer. Trouble is when I'm doing uni work that allows me time to think and get down :(.
The good news is he called me last night which is great and it was so good to hear his voice, even though he was pissed off with the heat and dust up his nose lol....So thanks Ladies looking foward to making new friends x

you enjoying your course? i did international relations at Portsmouth. Thats what i struggle with, with the hubby, i might squeeze him in somewhere!!! :D

How did you meet him? xx

Vicks
,
Hi Elz, I'm not actually in Oxford I drive there, Im in Cheltenham about an hour away...international relations sounds hard. Dont laugh but I met him on the internet, got fed up of meeting people I had nothing in common with so I friend had joined an online dating thing so i thought why not...we just had so much in common and his parents only live in Witney like 30 mins from me.

cool thats got a be a crappy drive everyday? mmmm i can see a lunch in oxford coming up ........ :D
nothing to laugh about that, i think thats the best way of meeting people now adays, at least there not pissed in a club/pub and just after one thing! plus you don't get that uneasy awkwardness when you go on the first date and try and make small talk! xx

Vickyx

Aww glad you heard from him :D xxx

Hi Elz,

Well actually as I am only studying part-time it was a once a week thing, however after 2 long years I have now completed all my modules and I only have my diss left so hoping to not have to go to Oxford much over the summer, only when i need to see my tutor. I am sure we could do a shopping trip to Oxford one weekend though.
I actually work full time as well in the opposite direction i am a busy lady at the mo! x

Hi to all the other girls thanks for all your advice and welcomes I LOVE this site its great. x
