View Full Version : When can I look at dresses?!

Hi girls
I know my wedding is a whole year away but lots of people have asked me if I've looked at any dresses yet!
Now I have had a mooch online so I know what shape and style I would like (if it suits me!) but when could I realistically go to a bridal shop and try some on?

I thought it'd be too early to look at them before January-ish! That would give me 6 months to find the perfect one and be fitted for it etc.

When did you girls (who planned their day well in advance!) first go and have a proper look?

Thanks x

start now if you feel like it hun. you'd be surprised how long some dresses can take. plus then you don't have to get stressed about it. xxx

Oo get in those shops now hun!!!

There is no specific rule on when to go - I was an early starter and ordered my dress 18mths before - but it did take a good 8mths to get back to the shop.

Take your time now - go to plenty of dress shops, make sure you get the 'one' & you definately know when you have found the 'one' lol. The shop where I got mine from has designer days a couple of times a year, where you get to try on the dresses that are coming out in the following season (so you wouldnt be out of date) but offer great discounts - have a ring round & see if any of your local dress shops do the same type of thing. But.... most of all enjoy the experience!! I loved it... I was never a girly girl & dreaded the dress finding job - but after one visit I was converted! Oo its bringing back all those lovely memories... Im getting quite jealous lol!

I WANT TO WEAR MY DRESS AGAIN!!!!!

HAVE FUN!!!!!

My dress was put on a rush order which cost loads which took 4 months to get there. Ordered it 1st may for a wedding 11th october and i had to collect it the night before as it was only just ready. I lost a load of weight week before following the stag do (long story) and there wasnt time to take it in again. We had about 2 weeks to find the perfect dress and went shopping nearly every other day. I knew i'd found the 'one' which was a good job as shopping in S****horpe, Grimbsy, York, Manchester and Leeds. I would advise to go to one quite close to where you live due to the amount of times you haver to go. Also take photos of them all ust to remember. You really wont know what u wanted till you start trying them on - i wanted something tight and straight with no fuss went to something big with lots of fuss. Try on every style ever colour just in case...

I haven't really started looking for mine yet - although will probably start looking when OH goes to Afghan in August which will be a year before we get married (gives me a project for whilst he's away!)

My brother got married last year and his wife's dress (and our bridesmaids dresses) were custom made and we went for our first fitting over a year before they got married - and we were the last wedding the dressmaker was taking for the following year as she was so booked up.

Be careful with some shops though as one near us charges you £50 just to try on the dresses (they take it off the purchase price if you buy one!)

its not to early to look now hun.

i am getting married in feb 2010 and i bought my dress on saturday. i thought with it being 8 months away i was early but the women there said i had left it abit late, because they have to send for it and get it fitted etc. she also told me that she has had woman coming in buying dresses for weddings in 2011!!

I would honestly start looking now. Dresses can take between 6-18 months to arrive from placing order. Plus sometimes the styles that you like may not be the one for you. You will be suprised once you start trying them on!! Also you need to shop around too as the prices differ shop to shop. For example I paid £460 (full price) for mine but found it in two other bridal shops for £850 and £950!

Awww thats so sweet - My Grandad was the first man to see my dress as we thought they had ordered the wrong colour so went and had a go at them untill we saw the order form (nig OOOPS!!!) coz it was all ok - When i tried it on he went watery eyed! Said i looked beautiful and he was very proud. To this day no one knows he saw the dress before the wedding as didnt want to upset the other people who didnt see it.

My dad saw my dress the day before the wedding at my final dress fitting and his chin wobbled (you know how it sometimes do when your about the cry) but then his phone rang a man from work wanting to wish us look - Seem abit weird think it was a staged class to get him out of the shop bless.
