View Full Version : Planning dates

I was just wondering if anyone has had to cancel or change wedding dates becuase of the Army? Just that OH has been sent on quite a few random courses and exercises on very short notice in the last few months and I can't imagine the Army will be too accommodating, especially if a tour gets planned.

Most venues seem to need booking at least a year in advance and you usually have to pay a huge deposit which you may not get back so it all seems quite risky, considering the Army barely know what they're doing from day to day, let alone year to year!

we didnt think about this we just booked it lol he will be sending his letter of consent in october though so the army will know he is getting married in feb. i would seriously murder someone if they made him go on a course on the wkend of his wedding lol. we booked ours 6 months ago and are getting married in feb, the deposit was 350, then it was another 500 few months later.
im sure it will be ok hun, coz the army will know when he is getting married.

Take our wedding insurance just incase hun!!!

Didnt happen to me, but I know people that have had to cancel over 3 times. Fingers crossed everything goes to plan, but wedding insurance will probably be a god send, then you wont loose no money xxx

I have been so lucky with my wedding, chris found out his summer leave dates, the week he went back after xmas leave, even before the easter dates came out, and they havent changed and we are getting married next week, so i count my lucky stars! Although i did briefly see my mum's e-mails the other day and noticed she had taken insurance out and not told me.....i'm hoping its just because chris is in the army and not the fact that she thinks its not going to happen lol xx

Yeh I need wedding insurance too! With oh due a posting around the same time as the wedding, I jus know something will 'come up'. How far in advance do you have to write to C/O about wedding date? Or is there nothing set in stone? x

Vickyx
,
Surely once you've booked up and written to the C/O then that's it set in stone right? Mind you its the army so I guess nothings set. How devastating must it be to have to replan and replan, its hard enough the first time and ive only planned mine mentally lmao! Got to wait til oh comes home for some planning time :)

Oh, I've done a lot of mental planning as well - in fact I've done pretty much the whole wedding in my head!

Can't really start doing anything about it yet though as we're going to have to do a LOT of saving. Plus I'd rather save to buy a house first so it looks like it's going to be a very long engagement! All that initial flurry of getting things organised ASAP has died down now, haha...

That's just the same as me, I know everything just need the money to pay for it! So we're saving until we think we have enough to set a date and start booking things up. Want it to come now lol! I'd love nothing more than to be married and happily living with my oh.

well my oh was supposed to be on his course on our wedding day but they kindly let him have it off, if they didnt have then he'd have just come and got married anyway regardless of what the army said coz he gave them plenty of notice and he was supposed to go on an earlier course but the army changed it. i'd suggest wedding insurance would be a great idea, just check what they cover though.

and vicky, trust me once you have a date set, you'll have so much to think about that it'll fly by and be there before you know it. i cant believe i've been married over a month already. lol its gone soooo fast. xxxx

***TAKE OUT WEDDING INSURANCE***

That is the only and best thing to do, you can try and find out as much as possible in advance and book it and send letter to CO.

There are specific companies out there that cater for this hun

It nearly happened to us my hubby was posted so he wrote a letter telling them we were getting married and told them the date. When he moved to his posting six months later they said they were sending him to Kenya. Please remember nothing is set in stone even though you have wrote a letter. My hubby only got away with in with someone fighting his corner we never knew he was going or not only two week up towards the wedding. If they have tours and exercises coming up don't book your wedding around that date. Also we all know that things can change last minute so get insurance.

My OH is out in Afghan and has left me to plan everthing for our wedding in January!! He has already had his tour extended so dosnt come home til the week before xmas! We have worked it so we get married during his post tour time off so fingers crossed it wont get messed up for us!! Been looking for insurance but will only cover the normal things like venue, photographer etc but not if anything happens to him as hes already away!!

Me and my oh are getting married next April and we took out wedding insurance as soon as we put down the deposit at the wedding venue. We have ours through Debenhams which covers unplanned deployment of armed service personnel. My oh is RAF so may be different from Army, but he told them we were planning on getting married on a specific date and they blocked it off in the diary so he shouldn't get deployed. They decided to send him out to the Falklands this year instead.

Hope you get it sorted, good luck with the planning!

Ok mental note....insurance! Lol!

We've taken out insurance with Event insurance - and it covers him being deployed abroad. We've told the RAF when we're getting married so fingers crossed they won't send him anywhere.

Also was talking to a work associate tonight who got married 4 weeks ago and he was saying the venue they'd originally booked had gone into administration 6 months ago so its worth having the insurance in the current economic climate regardless of postings etc.

I never considerd getting insurance incase my OH got sent away or anything. I was going to get it anyway but now I'l definately check it covers him getting deployed or whatever. Thank ya :) x

We got wedding insurance out with a company which was forces friendly, so even if we had to cancel because of a last minute exercise etc we were covered xx

my oh phoned cosford (where he will be doing his trade training in RAF) to see what time he is getting off. they told us a week so we planning things for around that. but we are going to wait till his is told that he can have that week off before we book anything as we dont know for sure if it is that week he will be going off. it is very annoying because i dont want to leave it till like 6 months before the date to get a dress because that will be really annoying.

sorry if it all confusing.

Is it really that likely that they can get deployed even if you tell em when ur getttin married??

Me n OH have just booked ours for V Day 2011, i know we need insurance but am still a lil confused by it all
Advice would be great

Abi xxxx :)

Although wedding insurance is practical and a MUST! you MUST go with a specific insurance company that deals with the Military, any old wedding insurance won't cover you for deployment, however if you OH is on deployment when your planning then its a different story as most of the insurance companies WILL NOT cover you in the event of lets just say the worst case senario.

The army do have to compensate you towards any deposits and costs lost due to having to cancel/rearrangement for deployment etc but they won't pay the full costs.

We have worked our dates around OH's tour, as he deploys Sept/Oct.
The letter of 'consent' isn't an actual permission letter as they can't really refuse you (apart from certain cases), its just a letter being curtious and its also said that your OH is to include his CO and their partner to your wedding.

Things can change as we all know with the Army, i have seen a few girls off another site stupidly book their wedding for the day after their OH's arrive back from tour, and as we well know on this site times of flights and dates of flights change!

we havnt got insurance sorted yet but im looking around for it as we def have to have some before we start forking out any more money. i am worried about us having to change our date as we have booked 20 months in advance and oh has no idea where hell be based or what he'll be doing at that point - so just going to be hopeful that he doesnt get sent anywhere!!

also when we were looking at venues and meeting the minister we asked them about their policies on changing dates - the place we booked said that they are happy to change the date once free of charge (obv would have to go along with their availability) but if you changed again or cancelled we would lose the cost of our deposit (500) so pretty happy cos wouldnt need to change date more than once hopefully :) xxxxx
