View Full Version : wedding readings....
I went to the hotel at the weekend to give them the number for the sit down meal and he was going through the whole day all the different things that are going to happen. He was saying about reading and i was just wondering if anyone knows what they are. I have googled it and it came up with different ideas of what you can have but im still a bit confused about what they are? If anyone could help it would be very helpful. Who would do the readings?

Hey hun,
Who told you about the readings? I know if your having a civil ceremony in a hotel/venue/civic centre/town hall you can get your witnesses or bridesmaids etc or anyone in fact lol to read readings but you should have recieved a pack from your registrat for this. If you mean the reception then i have no idea

The wedding is at Hotel. The person at the hotel said it happens before the wedding starts? I need to see the registor soon anyway

Hmmmm i've never heard of any readings being taken place before the Ceremony, but however he may mean a Master of Ceremonies who basically tells the guest that the Bride is on her way and could everyone stand. I got married to my sons Dad in a hotel and we had a Master of Ceremonies and he did this but thats all i can think of

hi hun
we have toi have a reading as we are getting married in a church, it will need to be done as aprt of our ceremony as well as 2 hymns, we have to nominate someone to read and choose the reading. however the Rvd is coming around this week to sit with us and go through the order of service and he will suggest a reading and hymns (the reading is generally a passage from the bible i belive)

At a civil ceremony you would normally have maybe two readings during the service (if I remember rightly, I think it's after you are officially married but before you sign the register and come down the aisle).
These readings are up to you to choose but there may be some guidelines/ideas available from the registrar - I know that at civil weddings you can't have religious music and it may well be that you can't have religious readinsg either).
I am sure we can give you some ideas here if you can't think of any. There are some beautiful poems that would be fitting, for example. Off the top of my head, Shakespeare's sonnet: "Love is not love, which alters when it alteration finds, It is an ever fixed mark, which looks on tempests and is never shaken" etc would be lovely. Or Elizabeth Barrett Browning, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways" Or it could be more modern - the lyrics to a love song?
As for who reads them; that's up to you! I did a reading at my friend's wedding (I was otherwise a normal guest) and at my brother's wedding the best man read one and the bride's brother read another. It's probably a good idea for a family member or close friend who isn't a bridesmaid etc.
I have some ideas. I just havent heard of them until yesterday when i went to the hotel with the number. I will have to see the registor and ask a bit more information on them.
Thanks for you help anyway girls
