View Full Version : If you had the choice would you...
..go for a white gold engagement ring with bigger diamond or a platinum engagement ring with smaller diamond?
Just curious as we chose mine yesterday. And I really struggled to decide which I preferred, love platinum but it's also nice to have bigger diamond.
I asked my Mum which she thought and she said opposite to what we went for so now im just wondering what you would go for.
xx
I'd just go for the one you both love. Rubbish answer I know but you'll hopefully be wearing it for the rest of your life. xxx
Yes that doesn't help at all!! lol!
Well we liked them equally that was the problem. We did actually go for the platinum and smaller diamond after, i only have little hands and short fingers anyway so it prob about the right size for me!
Was just curious about what bit people prioritised most when choosing a ring.

My engagement ring is platinum with a 1 carat diamond but my original ring (both given to me by my OH) was an 18 carat white gold ring with a 1 carat weight made up of 17 individual diamonds. (I'll post some pics up!!).
The reason why i was given a new engagement ring was because the old one was far too bulky for my small hands (my hands are the size of a 7 year olds lol) and when i tried on my wedding ring (was meant to be made by the same jeweller who made my original engagement ring but her company went bust in 2008) i looked like Mr T......the rings together looked well too big.
Moral if the story is, go for a ring which suits your hand, regardless of the material or diamond size. If OH had of realised in the first place that anything big would swamp my hand, he would have gone for a smaller ring!!

I've posted a pic of each ring on the thread for engagement rings.
Have a look and you'll understand what i mean by going for something that fits your hand. My original was way too big for my fingers!!

good advice and thanks youve made me feel better about our choice too. Yes put some pics up please. xx
lol - sorry - yes - MOAMs advice was sooo much better!
We chose the bigger diamond, I didn't want to spend more than £500 and there were 2 on offer- there was the 18ct white gold with a 1/4 ct diamond or a 9ct white gold ring with a 1/3 of a carot diamond both were £399 knocked down from over £500. i tried them both on and the 1/3 ct diamond won hands down, as we had a small budget it was lovely to see what looked like such a big diamond lol. I do wish the band was a little thicker but the diamond is gorgeous and feels like a proper engagement ring I didn't think we could ever afford lol, but we had a small budget and were working with smaller amounts of metal and carbon lol. As the other girls say it depends what looks good on ur hand and what u like, platinum is gorgeous and will be more hard wearing xxx

our budget was bout same at £550, although he did manage to get it for £500 after my haggling!! we went for the platinum with 1/4 carat diamond from a shop in worcester, although we had seen an 18ct white gold with 0.40 for £500 in the jewellery quarter in the morning both about G/H colour. quite a difference in size hence my dilemma, although to look at i actually couldn't see much difference in size myself? can they be wider and less deep but the same carat weight so to look at they look bigger/vice versa?
Ill put a pic up when he decides to actually ask lol! Want to keep trying it on but he won't let me.

Yep, carat weight is the weight of the stone - so the dimensions can be whatever as long as the weight is the same, the carat will be the same.
So do you have any idea when he might ask???? How exciting!

not sure hun, possibly- coz there was a real difference in the 1/4 ct and 1/3 ct ones I was looking at, they looked very diff on my finger, that's why it wasn't a hard decision for me to make at the time. if the diamonds had looked very similar I would have gone for the better quality gold band xxx
