Hi everyone, it's my first time on the site. My fiancee left for Afghanistan yesterday and was so close to tears all day at work so when I stumbled on this site at lunch time I thought it looked great.

We have been together nearly 7 years but this is his first posting in the time we've been living together and its so much more of a shock to the system.

Would love to hear from anyone else in the same boat.

p.s getting married in may 08 so trying to keep busy with wedding plans....any wedding related chat most welcome.

Thanks for your messages, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who has felt like this.

The stupid thing is I'm quite an independant person, I have travelled on my own and worked abroad. I think it's becuase we are finally so settled and the posting came as such a shock...thats probably why it has hit me so hard.

Our wedding is 3rd may next year, we are having it a place called dove barn in suffolk, the ceremony and reception all at the one place. We pretty much have everything organised....the theme is pale pink and white, I am having roses and my sister as bridesmaid. I am making my own invites which should keep me occupied.

Well martin should be arriving at about 11pm our time, just waiting to hear from him to know he has arrived safe and sound !

Hey there. I've been reading all your stories, they are really touching.

I'd love to know what you all do to keep yourself busy while your guys are away.

My boyfriend is just joining. I'm 23 and he is 19, a really mature one. We are wanting to get married soon but he has 8 months of basic training and then a couple of weeks off and then 7months of specialist training, so was wondering if we should get married inbetween, but then we still cant get a house cos i dont know where he will be based!

Do they go abroad for a long time?
If anyone lives in the north east i'd love to meet up, really want an insight into this. Does anyone know any good websites that tell you what life is like for the RAF wife?

Thank you,
Claire

Hi claire,
Welcome to wags this is the best place to be, my oh is in the raf too we just got married in october just after he finished his training and was based somewhere.
It depends on what your oh does for the going away thing cause mine goes away for 6 months at a time every 16-18 months but some only go away for 4 months every so often. hope that helps you out a little bit but im still learning x

hi there. Thank you for getting in touch!

So is that the same for everyone? they go away for at least 4 months every year?

Wow. How do you manage? I love my boyf so much and I think that may kill me him being away all of the time, especially for the least of 4 months, never mind any longer than that!

It's really strange isn't it??!!

So what is it like for you if you just got married not so long ago?

You just have to take a day at a time some of them are bad days, i just try and keep my friends around me. You cant be afraid to have a good cry as well. I cant wait for him to come home to finally have a honeymoon and start a proper married life, you just have to look forward to the little things lol.
So where is your boyfriend based ans where do you live? x

Hey Claire, I'm in a similar position to you, my boyfriend Mat is 19 and is heading to RAF Cranwell in May, he's gonna be away for a month, and then allowed to come back every weekend, until December. I don't know how I'm going to deal with it, we've been together 4 months and I love him to bits :)
it's gonna be so hard when he goes! So I know how you're feeling!

Hi Claire

you do get used to them going away, the first few nights are strange, then I tend to enjoy having a few nights on my own before I start to miss hubby. He is away at the moment, been gone 6 weeks and got another 5 weeks before get a week with him, then he goes back until end of June. So its quite some time, we have an 9 month old baby girl and it is much worse him being away this time and me having to do everything on my own, feel like a single mum. If your in a newish realtionship it is harder, must say we got married then a couple of months he was sent away for 4 months, I was in a strange place and didnt know many people, much easier know have friends round here and people in the same situation.
